Lula is awarded in NY for policies to combat hunger

New York. The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, received this Monday in New York the award given by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for his policies to combat hunger and poverty in Brazil, within the framework of the Goalkeepers initiative.

“The obsession I have with trying to combat hunger in the world is precisely because of my origin,” said Lula, who was born in northeastern Brazil into a very poor family of eight children forced to emigrate in search of work and new opportunities. .

Lula considered it “unacceptable that, in the 21st century with high technology, there are children who go to sleep without dinner and get up in the morning without having bread and butter for breakfast,” adding that ending hunger is a “responsibility.” of the rulers of the world.

According to the World Bank, in 2022 more than 712 million people were living in extreme poverty worldwide, an increase of 23 million compared to 2019.

“His work shows us that we can all have the vision that specific programs can generate incredible advances so that every child can grow and advance,” said Bill Gates, the billionaire philanthropist co-founder of Microsoft.

During his governments, Lula launched the Bolsa Familia program, which he considers, “without fear” of being wrong, “the most successful program” to combat hunger in the world.

In 2014, he assured, Brazil ended hunger, but after he returned to the presidency in 2023, the country had 33 million people with food needs, of which 24.5 have overcome the problem. He hopes that by 2026, when his second term concludes, there will be none in this group in the South American giant.

On November 18 and 19 in Rio de Janeiro, during Brazil’s presidency of the G20, it aims to launch the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.
