The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvadescribed this Tuesday as “extraordinary” that the Venezuelan opposition is grouped around a single candidate and reiterated his desire that all sectors respect the result of the elections on July 28.
“It’s an extraordinary thing”since the opposition to the Government of Nicolas Maduro “They met and a single candidate is presented,” Lula said at a press conference in apparent reference to Edmundo González the distancefrom Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD)the main anti-Chavista coalition.
González Urrutia has received support from other sectors of the Venezuelan opposition in recent days and was elected by the PUD after the electoral authorities rejected the registration of Maria Corina Machado first and then the Corina Yoris.
The Brazilian Government, when these candidacies were vetoed, expressed its “concern” about the obstacles imposed on the registration of candidates and received an angry response from the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.
Lula insisted this Tuesday that the elections in Venezuela, as well as in other countries, must be “transparent” and that the result of the elections must be recognized by everyone.
