The head of state of Belarus Alexander LukashenkoAlexander Lukashenko has been President of Belarus since 1994. Before joining approved amendments to the Penal Code that provide for the death penalty for attempted terrorism.
The relevant law has already been published on the national legal internet portal.
The document allows for the death penalty as an exceptional measure and for attempted terrorism. These are acts of international terrorism, in particular terrorism against a representative of a foreign state or international organization; terrorist acts committed by an organized group or with the use of nuclear facilities, radioactive substances, strong, toxic chemical or biological substances or involving killings; murders of state or public figures committed in connection with state or public activities.
Previously, the death penalty could not be required for the preparation of crimes, now these articles have been added to the list of exceptions.
Amendments to the Penal Code will enter into force ten days after their official publication.
