Lukashenko: Russia understood the reasons for the detention of ex-head of Belgazprombank

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko believes that Russia understood why the former head of Belgazprombank, presidential candidate Viktor Babariko, was detained. He made this conclusion after attending celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Victory in Moscow on June 24. Belgazprombank is owned by Gazprom and Gazprombank.

“My last observation: on the 24th I noticed that they saw it and understood. When we slammed this Gazprom bank, they all understood … Everyone suffers: oh, Lukashenko planted. And we didn’t call anyone there, we act according to the law, as it always has been, ”Mr Lukashenko said during a speech to an asset of the Minsk region in Salihorsk. It was broadcast by the TV channel Belarus 1.

The President said that Belgazprombank laundered $ 640 million and transferred money to Latvia. According to him, the information became known after “the Americans covered this bank.” Mr Lukashenko believes that “if the Americans had not pressed on a Latvian bank last year, we would hardly have any information.”

Presidential elections are scheduled for August 9 in Belarus. Alexander Lukashenko is running for a sixth term. The main competitor Viktor Babariko was detained on charges of financial crimes. Mr Lukashenko said that Russia and Poland are interfering in the internal affairs of the country. The Kremlin denies this.

More details about Mr. Lukashenko’s visit to Moscow for the parade can be found in the Kommersant’s article “Servants of the Parade”.
