Retaliatory sanctions have been imposed on those countries that have imposed sanctions on Belarusian legal and natural persons.

The European Union (EU) has imposed sanctions on Belarus in three rounds since October for human rights abuses and the falsification of presidential elections.

In Belarus, a large-scale protest against the falsification of the presidential election and the authoritarian leader Lukashenko began after the August 9 presidential election.
Authorities detained thousands of protesters, many of whom testified to torture.
Several protesters lost their lives and more than 400 protesters were sentenced to severe prison terms.
The opposition is demanding the removal of Lukashenko from power, the release of political prisoners and the holding of new elections.
