As explained in the Lukashenka’s administration, September 17 became “an act of historical justice” for the Belarusian people, which were “divided against their will in 1921” under the terms of the Riga Peace Treaty.
“The unity restored in 1939 allowed Belarus to withstand the years of the Great Patriotic War, to take an honorable place in the international community, to become one of the co-founders of the UN,” Lukashenka said.
The administration of the head of the Belarusian regime added that the introduction of the Day of National Unity emphasizes “the continuity of generations, the inviolability and self-sufficiency of the Belarusian nation and statehood.”
Note that on September 17, 1939, the Soviet Union carried out a military invasion of Poland. The division of Poland between the USSR and Nazi Germany marked the beginning of World War II.
