70 to 80% of Belarus’ presidential powers could be handed over to parliament and government during a meeting with government ministers on Monday, President Alexander Lukashenko said.
It would not be expedient to “break” the existing constitution in order to transfer part of the powers to the parliament and the government, the leader said.
He proposed a new mechanism, according to which the government will draft bills, the parliament will discuss and adopt them, but then submit them to the President for signature, reports the official news agency BelTA.
Lukashenko promised that the issue of redistribution of powers will be decided at the Belarusian People’s Meeting at the end of this year or early next year.
Belarus’s opposition refuses to rule on Lukashenko’s amendments to the constitution, insisting that he renounce power after falsified elections and a secret inauguration.
Opponents also insist on Lukashenko’s personal responsibility for the mass repression of peaceful protesters.
