Lukas Dhont’s Oscar campaign gets off to a great start: first prize for “Close” at the New York Film Festival

Last month it was announced that “Close” will be the Belgian voice of the Oscars. That doesn’t mean the film will actually be nominated. A long list is first compiled from all entries for the Best International Film category. Subsequently, a maximum of five films will be nominated from a shortlist of nine films.

Lukas Dhont’s debut film “Girl,” was also nominated for an Oscar, but failed to win a nomination. The director is now campaigning in the United States to increase his chances.

“Close” premiered at the Film Fest Gent in recent days. The film will be in Belgian cinemas from 2 November.
