Chelsea hosted Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. The visitors started strong in the first half but Chelsea took over in the second and got all three points.
It was returning Romelu Lukaku who opened the scoring for Chelsea in the first half. After a short tussle with the defender, Mateo Kovacic finally tucked the ball home. It was the Belgian’s second goal since his return and the first in front of the home crowd.
It was the only goal in the first half, which was largely Aston Villa who controlled. But they did not manage to get dividends for skillful play while Edouard Mendy was responsible for most of the important saves.
Instead, the next goal would also come from Chelsea. Tyrone Mings failed to score at the penalty spot, but his header was tipped over the bar by the visitors’ keeper. But then Kovacic came at full speed and picked up the ball. He could easily put it 2-0.
In stoppage time, Lukaku was able to show up again and put the final result of the match to 3-0.
With the victory, Chelsea hooks Manchester United at the top of the table. They are on the same score and the same goal difference.
