Vieri defends Lukaku: I missed more goals than I scored
Former Inter and Italy striker Christian Vieri defended the Belgian Romelu Lukaku, who did not perform what was expected of him with the Nerazzurri this season after returning to the team on loan from Chelsea.
The 29-year-old has scored six goals in 22 club matches this season, but the last time he scored from an open game was in August 2022, during a 2-1 win over Lecce at Via del Mare.
Lukaku will return to Chelsea at the end of his loan period in the summer, and it is not certain that Inter will give him the opportunity to play in their ranks again in 2023-2024.
His poor form has been the subject of debate in Italy as Inter are currently knocked out of the top four following their 1-1 draw with Salernitana on Friday.
“As a footballer, I’ve missed more goals than I’ve scored, but it’s important to have chances,” Vieri said during Bobo’s Twitch show on Sunday.
And he added, “It will be dramatic if he does not have chances to score goals (meaning Lukaku). If he does not have a chance in ten matches.”
“He must play 90 minutes, and it is illogical to replace him after only one hour,” the former Italian striker added.
It is noteworthy that Lukaku shone remarkably with Inter from 2019 to 2021 when he moved to him from Manchester United, scoring 64 goals in 95 matches in all competitions, which prompted Chelsea to include him, but his trip to Stamford Bridge in the British capital, London, did not go well.
