Romelu Lukaku was one of the key players when Inter took their first Serie A title in eleven years this spring. The Belgian scored 24 league goals and formed a dreaded attacking duo with the Argentine Lautaro Martinez on the way to the Scudetto.
This summer, Lukaku then pushed through a move to his former club Chelsea, which caused Inter supporters to turn against the 28-year-old and call him a traitor. Once in place at the London club, it has not turned out as Lukaku intended, he now admits in an unusually sincere interview with Sky Sport Italia.
– After two years in Italy, where I worked so hard at Inter with the fitness staff and the dietician, I feel better than ever. But I’m not happy with the situation at Chelsea, that’s normal. The coach (Thomas Tuchel) has chosen to play with a different game system, but I must not give up. I have to keep working and be a professional, says Lukaku.
The Belgian also says that he regrets the way he left Inter this summer and that he wants to return to the club later in his career.
– It was not meant to happen that way. The way I left Inter, the way I communicated with the fans, it irritates me. I want to apologize to the Inter fans, I should have talked to you first, says Lukaku and continues:
– Now is the right time to talk, because I said that I will always have Inter in my heart and I genuinely hope that one day I will return to play there. Not at the end of my career, but when I’m still on the level to win more titles.
Romelu Lukaku has been listed for seven goals in 18 appearances in the Chelsea shirt this season and has a contract with the London club until the summer of 2026.
