In Group F of the 2023 World Cup Men’s Basketball Tournament, Luka Doncic scored 37 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in his debut, leading the Slovenian team to a 100-85 victory over Venezuela.
Although the Slovenian team was strong, they only relied on Doncic’s firepower in the first half, leading 56-51. Doncic made 7 of 10 shots, scored 24 points, 4 assists and 2 turnovers.
Entering the second half, Doncic dominated the game, opened up the point difference in the third quarter, and widened the lead in the fourth quarter. Venezuela tried to narrow the point difference in the last 2 minutes, but was stopped by Doncic’s key basket attack. Vinia stabilized the situation and eventually defeated Venezuela 100-85.
Doncic played 30 minutes, 11 of 18 shots, 2 of 8 three-pointers, 13 of 16 free throws, 37 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.
“We knew it was going to be a very difficult game,” Doncic said after the game. “We played against each other two years ago in the Olympic qualifiers. They were very physical and they shot very well. It wouldn’t be An easy game. We had to fight till the end and in the end, we won this one.”
Judging from this game, Doncic lacked cooperation with his national teammates. Except for 4 turnovers, when his teammates were not going well, he could only hit the basket frequently and make free throws (16 free throws in the game). Although this style of play is effective, it is also expensive. If this problem cannot be solved, it will be difficult for Slovenia to make a breakthrough.
