Luise: A Tale of Survival, Self-Determination, and Love in the Shadows of War

Description : October 1918 in Alsace, just before the end of the First World War. The pious farmer Luise lives alone on a secluded farm near the French border. One morning, Hélène is standing in her kitchen, a young French woman fleeing from a German soldier. Shortly thereafter, Hélène’s injured pursuer Hermann also appears, who himself seems driven. Luise treats the soldier’s wounds and decides to give them both shelter. But as the two women become friends over the next few days and get closer, Hermann becomes increasingly irritable. He wants to win Luise over by all means. Inspired by DH Lawrence’s novella “The Fox” (1923), director Matthias Luthardt (“Pingpong”) brings three people together in a moral borderline situation and a narrow space. Against the background of an almost endless war waged by men, “Luise” develops into a precisely staged and impressively acted struggle for survival and a touching film about female self-determination and an awakening love.
