EL NUEVO DIARIO, NEW YORK — Luis Severino immediately dropped his glove and clutched his left side, wincing in pain after throwing his last pitch Friday night. It may have been the Dominican’s last pitch as a member of the Yankees.
“I feel like someone shot me,” Severino said after New York’s 8-2 loss to the Brewers. “It is a deep and sharp pain.”
On Saturday, the Yankees placed Severino on the 10-day injured list and the pitcher was scheduled to undergo testing. Right-hander Ron Marinaccio was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Severino will be a free agent after the season. His chances of finishing the campaign on a positive note are now at risk.
The Dominican was called to the American League All-Star Game in 2017 and 2018, and there was optimism about his future in the spring of 2019, when he signed a four-year, $40 million extension with the club.
Severino has also missed time with groin, latissimus dorsi and shoulder injuries. When the Yankees exercised their $15 million option in November 2022, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the decision at the time was “an easy yes.” But any decision regarding Severino from now on will not be so clear.
“There’s a lot on the line for him,” manager Aaron Boone said. “He’s been through a lot these last few years. [con] injuries, and when he has pitched, he has pitched very well. This year, when he returned, he had an extended slump for the first time in his healthy career.
