Luis Severino Opens Up About Departure from the New York Yankees and Future with the Mets

After eight seasons with the New York Yankees, pitcher Luis Severino, He was a free agent at the end of the 2023 campaign. That’s when the city rival, the Mets, offered the Dominican a one-year, $13 million dollar contract to join their ranks.

But despite not moving from the city, Severino seems to still be affected by leaving the Yankees. Well, in a recent virtual press conference, the 29-year-old pitcher held nothing back and commented on how he feels about his departure from the Bronx team.

“I thought I would die a Yankee.”, the pitcher announced in the conference. However, he clarified that he feels comfortable in his new franchise and intends to work in the same way he did in The Bronx, but now in Queens.

“What keeps me going is the pressure. I love being under pressure. I was in New York for a long time. I am happy to be with this organizationthe Mets, because I want to continue feeling that pressure,” added the Quisqueyan.

Severino has only played with the New York Yankees in the Major Leagues. He debuted with the Big Apple team in 2015 and since then he wore the franchise’s uniform for eight seasons.

However, injuries and irregularity did not allow him to establish himself in the New York team’s rotation. He left a record of 54-27 in 125 starts and an ERA of 3.79 during his time with the bomber team.

Severino wants to correct his mistakes now with the Mets

Now with the New York Mets, Severino sees a new opportunity to strengthen his career in the Major Leagues. However, he recognizes that he must correct several aspects in his game mechanics to improve for the 2024 season.

“There are a lot of things I think I was doing wrong. I always have trouble giving clues about what pitch I was going to throw and stuff like that.”Severino confessed in the virtual press conference. “I think I need to telegraph releases, So when I get on the mound, when the season starts, I just need to focus on pitching and forget about whether my glove is too high or too low,” the Dominican concluded.
