FLORIDA.- Luis Severino is having a preseason with very disappointing numbers. In three starts and 8.2 innings worked, the Dominican has allowed 9 hits and the same number of earned runs, being the target of 5 home runs. For the New York Yankees’ right-hander, his failure this spring was down to one thing: his slider.
“My slider sucks. That’s what the coaches are telling me,” Severino told the New York Post. «I need to work on my slider. It’s not your movement, but your location,” he added.
For the Yankees, it is very important that Severino can perform at the start of the 2023 season after the injuries to Carlos Rodón and Frankie Montas, who will leave manager Aaron Boone’s rotation orphaned.
“For me, that’s the pitch that takes the longest to fine-tune,” Severino said. “I just need to work more on the location. But everything else is fine.”
Luis Severino: “The results are getting better. I gave up four runs last time. I gave up three [today]. So hopefully by the beginning of the season, I’m going down to zero.”

The Yankees did not allow Severino to go to the World Classic with the Dominican Republic due to his past injuries and for this reason they are working on his mechanics in the preseason. Remember that Severino missed 174 days in the 2019 season with a right shoulder injury, then had to go through Tommy John surgery and then was out for 70 more days in 2022 due to back discomfort.
Severino had a good 2022 by posting a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 112 strikeouts and 30 walks in 102 innings of work, and for this reason the Yankees will avoid having any setbacks with him.
