In a surprising turn of events, Luis Rubiales submitted his resignation as president of the Spanish Football Federation on September 10. This decision came after weeks of controversy and tension in the world of football, due to Rubiales’ kiss to player Jennifer Hermoso after Spain won the Women’s World Cup.
Rubiales, who remained steadfast in his position despite growing opposition and criticism, resigned under pressure from UEFA.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin called Rubiales from Switzerland and told him a clear choice: “Either you resign or I will fire you,” according to what was published by the Spanish daily “Sport.”
This decision represents the end of an era in the Spanish Football Federation, which has witnessed internal tensions and disagreements in recent months. FIFA had previously taken a decision to temporarily suspend Rubiales for 90 days.
Rubiales, who had a loyal following, including members of his trusted team, voluntarily ignored advice and requests to resign, but Ceferin’s call marked the point of no return in this crisis.
