Luis Palma: From Honduras to Celtic – A Rising Star in Scottish Football

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.-In the run-up to the match between Celtic and Atlético de Madrid for the third round of the group stage of the Champions League, Diario Marca contacted the Honduran Luis Palma and they talked about everything.

The catracho was one of Celtic’s figures on Wednesday, after scoring a great goal in the 2-2 draw against the red and whites.

Palma says that he never imagined reaching one of the biggest clubs in Scotland.

“It didn’t cross my mind, I was just a boy who wanted to be happy playing football, but there were people who motivated me to take football as a job at my young age, to take on a responsibility. So I kept doing it and it’s a blessing from God that I’m now at the biggest club in Scotland. My parents are prouder than me, it gives me peace of mind,” he told Marca about the change that his life has brought.

In Marca they highlight the career of Luis Palma from Vida to his time at Arís FC in Greece.

“What I ask God is to keep me humble and calm and to take me step by step in every moment, stage of my life, listening to the advice that can help me in the future. Since 2021, they have been years of great blessing that have marked my career greatly,” he highlighted.

Isaac Suárez, a Marca journalist who interviewed Luis Palma, reminded him of that match where a young Erling Haaland would score nine goals for Honduras in a U-20 World Cup.

“Don’t remind me, I’ll poison myself. We can say that it was a tragedy for our team and what Honduras was. It marked us, but that gave me maturity. I had time for it,” explained the Celtic player.

Likewise, he told what has been the key to achieving success in his professional career. The pandemic was something that marked his career. Because?

“I have always told my family that the pandemic was bad for millions of people, but it helped me a lot. When there was that break in the Honduras League I worked at home every day to make you jump and well, when the League returned in Honduras I think I was more mature after what happened in 2019. I took care of myself, thanks to me Mom is the one who knows everything, in terms of nutrition because we couldn’t leave the house for six months and I did a gym at home and on my bike, that marked me a lot to realize what I wanted to succeed in life. I came back from the pandemic and started scoring goals, with assists and in a very excellent year and a half I was able to go to Greece,” he commented.

The bug

Luis Palma revealed in this interview with Marca that he does not like to be called “Bicho”, a nickname he earned in Honduras after celebrating his goals like Cristiano Ronaldo.

“When I was in Honduras I celebrated my goals as Cristiano and people started saying that I was like him. But there came a time when he bothered me, although I got used to it. There is only one bug, I now have a more professional part, so now I have to find my own celebration,” he said.
