CHICAGO (ESPNDeportes). — Luis Gil pitched six brilliant innings in his return from a back injury and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0 on Friday.
Aaron Judge hit an RBI double and scored on Austin Wells’ two-run single in an all-New York third inning. This was the Yankees’ first visit to Wrigley Field since 2017. Judge went 1-for-3 with a walk in his 10th straight game without a homer, his longest skid of the season.
The Yankees (81-60) improved to 2-2 on a six-game road trip that began with a tough series in Texas. They were a half-game behind the Baltimore Orioles for the AL East lead entering the game.
The Cubs (72-69) lost for the third time in four games since a successful road trip put them back in the conversation for the third NL wild-card spot.
Chicago left-hander Jordan Wicks (2-3) allowed five hits and walked four in five innings in his second start since returning from an oblique injury. The Cubs’ lineup was held down by Gil (13-6) and three relievers on a windy afternoon.
Gil allowed Chicago’s only hit — a double by Cody Bellinger in the fourth inning — in his first major league start since Aug. 20. The right-hander struck out seven and walked two.
For the Yankees, Venezuelan Gleyber Torres was 1-for-4 with one run scored. Dominican Juan Soto was 1-for-4 with one run scored. Mexican Alex Verdugo was 1-for-4.
