With their 2-1 win at 1. FC Köln on Friday, SC Paderborn not only exacerbated the crisis among the billy goats and their coaching discussion, but also underlined their own standing as the top team in this 2nd Bundesliga – and remarkably, at the same time three debutants.
While Markus Schubert’s second division debut in the Paderborn goal in place of the recently shaky Pelle Boevink had already been announced in advance and Adrian Bravo Sanchez, at the advanced age of 30, unexpectedly came on as a substitute for the first time in the 71st minute, coach Lukas Kwasniok made sure of the nomination 17-year-old Luis Engelns in the starting line-up for the biggest surprise.
Called up as a replacement for the injured Sebastian Klaas in central midfield, Engelns, who had made his professional debut a week earlier in Kaiserslautern in the final phase, played in the eyes of his coach “A brilliant first game here in Cologne.” On the Press conference after the game Meanwhile, Kwasniok let it be known that he had expected nothing else: “That also says a lot about his character. He – if you can put it that way – doesn’t give a shit, just plays along and does it in a heartwarming way.”
A “stroke of luck for SC Paderborn”
In general, the SCP coach made no secret of his high regard for the youngster, whose father Daniel Farke is currently coaching Leeds United. “The only problem is that he hasn’t finished school yet. Otherwise he would have played much earlier.”said Kwasniok, who brought Engelns to Cologne after a full week of training with the professionals was possible due to the holidays.
Basically, Kwasniok sees himself in the “Responsibility towards the player” and makes the priorities clear: “We don’t want to burn it up. He should get a proper high school diploma. That’s why we can’t believe that he’ll play with us week after week.
As soon as Engelns can focus completely on football, Kwasniok clearly expects a lot and sees the U18 national player, who has been training at the club since 2016, as a “A stroke of luck for SC Paderborn” and highlights its advantages: “He can run a lot, has an extremely quick mind, is a goal threat and understands the game.”
These statements alone suggest that Engelns will continue to work despite the school workload and will at least work part-time in the coming weeks.
