The Castro regime decided to dismiss Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Havana, a decision that was made during the last Plenary Session of the Provincial Committee of the political body held this Friday, April 5.
According to Caribbean Channelthe authorities agreed to relieve him for “renewal of his responsibility,” although they did not give details about the reasons for the decision.
This is considered the most important provincial political position in Havana, and after Torres’ dismissal, authorities assigned Liván Izquierdo Alonso as his replacement. Izquierdo held the same position in Ciego de Ávila.
The new First Secretary of the PCC in Havana has a long history within the ranks of the Castro regime. He has a degree in Physical Culture and a master’s degree in Business Management. Likewise, he is a member of the Central Committee of the Party and a deputy to the National Assembly.
During the plenary session in which the changes were announced, the management recognized the work that Torres Iríbar carried out for more than five years, this after he relieved Mercedes López Acea in her position in June 2018.
This change adds to the intense activity that the Castro authorities have carried out in recent times, since six first provincial secretaries have already been replaced in just five months.
Many of the people who have replaced them were relocated from roles as governors, apparently elected from their position as provincial deputies, something that makes evident the need for a separation of powers on the Island and the lack of respect for electoral processes.
Likewise, the importation of several leaders from other provinces has drawn attention, as this suggests a shortage of figures considered sufficiently loyal to the PCC in the affected territories.
The changes began last year
The most important changes began in November 2023, when Yanaisi Capó Nápoles, in Granma, was dismissed less than two years after being assigned to the provincial leadership. Her departure could have been due to the handling she carried out with the court case of doctors accused of negligence for the death of a young manwho died due to lack of supplies in hospitals.
After that, the authorities dismissed Rafael Pérez Fernández in Guantánamo, who was replaced by Yoel Pérez García, a doctor from Villa Clara.
Both Capó Nápoles and Pérez Fernández have not been assigned to a new position, so their current whereabouts are unknown.
