TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Senior politician from Golkar Party Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that Airlangga Hartarto’s decision to resign as General Chairman of Golkar was Airlangga’s personal right.
“Yes, I … he has the right to resign,” Luhut said briefly, when he met next to the inspection of the ministry building in the capital of Indonesia (IKN), Sunday, August 11 2024.
Before his resignation, Airlangga Hartarto met one-on-one with President Joko Widodo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday, 9 August 2024. The meeting lasted between Coordinating Minister Economic Affairs and President Jokowi for more than an hour starting at 14.00 WIB. .
After the meeting, Airlangga told reporters from the Presidential Palace that he and Jokowi only discussed the latest developments in the economic situation. For example, regarding China’s trade surplus and the renewal of free trade negotiations with the European Union (CEPA).
However, Airlangga was asked about the possibility of changing the position of Golkar General Chairman through the party’s Special National Conference or Munaslub. Airlangga, at that time, still believed that the banyan party change machine would last until December.
“Yes, that’s clear, the National Conference schedule is in December. Golkar hard. Solid,” said Airlangga after the meeting with Jokowi, responding to the Munaslub issue.

Several Golkar officials told Tempo that Airlangga Hartarto was said to have signed a letter of resignation as General Chairman of the Golkar Party on Saturday 10 August 2024. Airlangga confirmed this through a video statement today.
In the video description, Airlangga said he was resigning to maintain the integrity of the Golkar Party. “To ensure the stability of the government move that will happen soon,” he said.
Elite Golkar told Tempo that there will be several scenarios that will play out after Airlangga’s retirement. The first is the Deputy General Chairman of the Golkar Party, Agus Gumiwang, to be named as the Acting General Chairman of Golkar. Agus Gumiwang is currently the Minister of Industry.
