Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investments Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan he said that Indonesia’s gas supply is likely to run into a deficit in the coming years.
The forecast is that in 2026 Indonesia will depend on imported gas. The forecast was explained by Luhut on the basis of data from the national gas balance of the ESDM ministry.
“The National Gas Balance data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources shows that the gas supply for domestic needs will start to suffer a deficit that depends on imports in 2026,” Luhut said in his video speech at the 3rd Indonesia Upstream Oil and Gas 2022 International Conference, Nusa Dua, Bali, Wednesday (23/11/2022).
Although, second Luhut Indeed, gas reserves in Indonesia are very large. Luhut stressed that the main problem in the gas sector is inadequate infrastructure planning.
“There are currently many gas discoveries, but proper infrastructure planning is needed to connect production locations with potential natural gas consumers to ensure that demand can be met efficiently with available supply,” Luhut said.
For this reason, a comprehensive and integrated plan is needed in the planning and development of the national gas infrastructure that guarantees an optimal balance between our supply and our demand. In addition, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has called for gas power development to be carried out on a large scale in Indonesia.
“Our president has charged us with developing a comprehensive national gas utilization blueprint that will encourage the growth of gas-using industries and increase the efficiency of our gas infrastructure,” Luhut said.
ESDM Minister Arifin Tasrif added that at least Indonesia has demonstrated potential gas reserves of around 43 trillion cubic feet (TCF). His party will carry out several strategic programs in the gas energy sector, starting with the expansion of the use of gas as a fuel and industrial raw material through the construction of integrated gas transmission and distribution infrastructure.
His party also plans to convert diesel to gas in power plants and infrastructure development. Arifin also said his party will build a pipeline network for households and small businesses.
“We still plan to increase oil and gas production by around 1 million barrels of oil and 12 BSCFD in 2030 which are specifically for domestic use, considering Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas potential is still very large. “, Arifin said at the same event.
