Luhut Japan’s Response to the Ban on Coal Exports: We’ll Solve it

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan responding to protests by the Government Japan on the export ban policy coal by the Government of Indonesia.

He promised to resolve the protest properly tomorrow, Saturday (7/1), when the meeting related to the polemic of the coal supply crisis was resolved.

“Yes, tomorrow we will answer everything. Anyway, we will settle it well. All will be finished later,” he told reporters, Friday (7/1) night.

He said that communication with the two countries was the task of the Minister of Trade Muhammad Lutfi. “I think (communication) is the business of the trade minister,” he added.

Luhut added that the results of the coordination meeting to resolve the coal supply crisis would be finalized tomorrow. The meeting has been held since Thursday (6/1) yesterday.

“Tomorrow is still in the meeting, it is being finalized. Hopefully tomorrow it will be finished,” he said.

Previously, the Japanese government protested against the ban on coal exports imposed by Indonesia until January 31, 2022. This was stated in a letter sent by the Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Kanasugi Kenji.

In the letter, Kenji asked the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to lift the ban. The reason is, the ban will have a serious impact on economic activities and daily life of the country of Sakura.

Understandably, several power plants and Japanese manufacturers rely on coal supplies from Indonesia. Moreover, Japan is currently entering winter, where the demand for coal is high.

“Industry in Japan regularly imports coal from Indonesia for power generation and manufacturing (about 2 million tons per month). Therefore, we request to immediately lift the ban on coal exports to Japan,” Kenji wrote in his letter, Wednesday (5/5). /1).
