Luhukay after more than a year away as coach of the Second Bundesliga club St. Pauli | NOW

Jos Luhukay will no longer be a trainer of FC St. Pauli next season. The club from the Second Bundesliga decided on Sunday after the last round of the season not to continue with the Dutchman, whose contract lasted another year.

Luhukay was appointed to St. Pauli in April last year with the assignment to help promote the club in the final phase of the season. He failed to do so and this season St. Pauli finished in disappointing 14th place.

“I am very grateful to have been able to work for this wonderful and special club,” said 57-year-old Luhukay on the St. Pauli site on Monday. “Maybe I would do it differently in the future when it came to voicing the necessary criticism internally, but I did it out of love for the club. I wish them good luck in the future.”

The born Venlonaar has been active in Germany for almost his entire trainer career, where he previously stood for the group of Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Augsburg, Hertha BSC and VfB Stuttgart, among others.

In January 2018, Luhukay went to England for an adventure with Sheffield Wednesday, but was fired there a year later. A few months later he returned to Germany with St. Pauli.

“With his expertise and willingness to achieve success, he has initiated the necessary course changes that we can continue to benefit from in the future,” said St. Pauli director Andreas Bornemann. “He has secured a permanent place in the club’s history.”
