Saxony’s airports in Dresden and Schkeuditz are awakening from their corona rigidity. Lufthansa had already been flying from Dresden to Frankfurt am Main for a year. Starting in July, three daily connections are to start from the state capital to the Main metropolis. From August, the route from Dresden to Munich will also be served daily again.
“That is an optimistic signal”
Lufthansa has been flying from Leipzig / Halle Airport to Frankfurt am Main again since Monday. Other airlines also want to resume operations. “It is very gratifying that Lufthansa is taking off again from Leipzig / Halle,” explains airport spokesman Uwe Schuhart. “We now hope, of course, that the offer will also be actively used.” The flights to Frankfurt am Main will be offered up to eight times a week and will later be extended to 14 weekly, according to Schuhart. The connection has been suspended since March 18, 2020 due to the pandemic.
“We are delighted that Lufthansa is again represented at both airports. This is an optimistic signal and an important step towards connecting the Central Germany region to the airline’s global route network as required, ”explains Götz Ahmelmann, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG.
When Lufthansa announced in autumn 2020 that it would no longer fly from Leipzig to Hesse by the summer flight schedule, there was a great outcry from politics and business. The unanimous opinion at the time: Leipzig, as a trade fair and congress city, but also as an economic region, needs connections to the metropolises. “We are really happy that this is now back with Frankfurt,” said Schuhart.
Austrian Airlines has been flying to Vienna again for some time. There are up to five connections per week. “And the sun targets have also been back in the program since the end of the lockdown,” says Schuhart. “Condor and Eurowings fly to Mallorca, the Tui to Greece.”
There are also flights to Hurghada (Egypt) and Antalya (Turkey). The Canaries are also on the agenda. Incidentally, the first flight after the lockdown was to Egypt. According to the flight schedule, up to twelve scheduled flights are currently taking off from Schkeuditz every day.
Corona tests directly at the airport
And one more should be added from July. “We are delighted that Turkish Airlines is heading to Leipzig / Halle Airport again,” said the airport spokesman. “There will be a direct connection to Istanbul.” However, the airport also points out that the flight plan will be continuously adjusted by the airlines due to the pandemic. Short-term changes are possible at any time.
From Dresden Sundair currently offers flights to Heraklion (Crete) Kos and Rhodes (Greece) KLM to Amsterdam, Eurowings to Düsseldorf and Mallorca, Swiss Airlines to Zurich and Freebird Airlines to Antalya (Turkey).
If you start your vacation from Dresden or Leipzig / Halle and need a negative test, you can be tested directly at the airport. Two external providers offer the paid service. However, the result of a PCR test is only available after 24 hours.
