Lufthansa refrains from firing pilots

Lufthansa refrains from dismissing pilots for operational reasons.

the essentials in brief

  • Training starts again in summer.

The “crisis-related excess staff” at the core brand Lufthansa has already been “dismantled in a socially responsible manner” with a volunteer program, as the group announced on Friday. Germany’s largest airline also sees “better prospects again in the long term”. That is why pilot training will be resumed in the summer.

The number of passengers collapsed during the Corona crisis. Lufthansa stopped training new pilots altogether; CEO Carsten Spohr announced the goal of reducing the number of employees from 138,000 (before the pandemic) to around 100,000. From early summer 2021, pilots aged 55 and over could voluntarily retire in return for a severance payment; around 400 did so.

Lufthansa is now also offering co-pilots the option of retiring voluntarily. In addition, “collective part-time agreements could solve the existing excess staff,” the airline said. Lufthansa plans to give details of the program at its balance sheet press conference on March 3rd.

According to the spokeswoman, those who had to interrupt their training due to the pandemic can also register for the approximately 24-month training course in Germany, Switzerland and the USA.
