The German airline Lufthansa was fined four million dollars (over €3.6 million) in the United States for barring a group of Jewish passengers. It was said that some of the passengers had not worn a face mask – against the rules – and subsequently the whole group was stopped.
The incident took place in May 2022, when a group of 128 passengers from New York were stopped in Frankfurt. They were on their way to Budapest, but Lufthansa did not allow the passengers to continue their journey.

On the flight from New York to Frankfurt, several passengers reportedly refused to wear face masks. This was mandatory at the time due to corona measures. According to Lufthansa, “an unfortunate series of miscommunications, misinterpretations and misjudgments” led to the decision to deny passengers boarding. There is no discrimination, the airline emphasizes.
The airline apologized to all passengers at the time for the ‘inconvenience’ and personal impact’. “What happened is not in line with Lufthansa’s policies or values. We have zero tolerance for racism, anti-Semitism or discrimination of any kind.”
