When the final whistle sounded, the Werder fans breathed a sigh of relief – and goal hero Oliver Burke showed the double winning fist. The home curse is finally over, Werder Bremen has finally won in their own stadium again.
Thanks to Joker Burke’s late goal, the Green-Whites won the intense northern duel against newly promoted Holstein Kiel 2-1 (1-0). Burke and Co. enjoyed the little lap of honor in the Weser Stadium – and everyone was happy for the hero of the day, who had recently received so little playing time.
“Football writes these stories, Oliver had a difficult time,” said Werder’s professional football boss Peter Niemeyer on Sky: “But he accepted his role and worked hard.” The team started the game “well,” but “the second half was an open exchange of blows in which we scored the lucky punch.”
Burke ended the Werder fans’ wait for their first home win with his goal in the 89th minute. Jens Stage (36th) was also successful for the Green-Whites, but Phil Harres’ equalizer (48th) was not enough for Kiel in the end.
Thanks to the celebrated threesome, Werder and coach Ole Werner moved closer to the international places. The Kiel team, who had their first Bundesliga win the previous week, remain second to last.
