Lucinda Williams: Stories From A Rock N Roll Heart – A Bravely Rock Solid Album

Exactly when Lucinda Williams in ‘Jukebox’ pays a melancholic ode to her favorite pub that she can reach without a car, guitarist Stuart Mathis lets out a full guitar chord. It’s a subtle reference to ‘Metal Firecracker’, one of the best tracks from the 25-year-old masterpiece Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. The Lucinda Williams of today is no longer the same and the flare on wheels of the past has become a calm ride in the back seat of a taxi. But her music is still rock solid.

After the lockdown, during which she made some nice cover albums, Williams suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. She got back on her feet but lost the ability to play the guitar; a sad fact that she bravely faces by on Stories From A Rock N Roll Heart emphatically posing with an electric guitar. Her fifteenth album is especially brave because Williams (70) makes no secret of her advancing age and the things that passed. “Give me one more taste of my lost youth” she muses in ‘Last Call for the Truth’.

Bruce Springsteen lends his voice to “New York Comeback,” as they exchange details about the perfect rock ‘n’ roll show. Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers inspired the title track and in ‘Hum’s Liquor’ Williams pays tribute to another deceased rocker, The Replacement’s Bob Stinson. A good song always knows where to find her, she sings in ‘Where the Song Will Find Me’. Country singers Margo Price and Angel Olsen sing a choir on an album that rocks and moves.
