«I would like to meet Luciano, talk to him, give him advice». He said it right away Losing PiccioniDoctor Amnesia, known above all as the doctor from “Doc”, the TV series with Luca Argentero inspired by his life. When he read the interview with Luciano D’Adamothe Roman who after a road accident lost the memory of 39 years of his life, Piccioni immediately thought of a meeting with that man who lives a story so similar to his. The meeting took place yesterday, in Pavia, at the doctor’s home. And to document it there were the cameras of “Who has seen it?”, for a report that the program hosted by Federica Sciarelli will broadcast in this evening’s episode (RaiTre, at 9.20 pm).
INSIGHTS
«We discussed many things» says Luciano, who in the meantime has returned to Rome. «We also promised to meet again here, when he comes to Rome he will contact me».
Come LucianoPierdante Piccioni also suffers from a serious form of retrograde amnesia, albeit for a shorter (but still very long) period of time: he has lost twelve years of memories.
Their stories are very similar. Both woke up after an accident convinced that they had gone back in time (Luciano even thought he was in 1980, while the accident had occurred in 2019). Both did not recognize their children (Pierdante because he still remembered them as children, Luciano because he even had no memory of their birth). And neither of them has ever recovered their lost memory, the years erased from their heads have never returned and at this point it is very likely that they will never return.
Luciano D’Adamo, 39 years of memories vanished in a few minutes. The neuropsychologist: «Striking case, a mystery for science»
In an interview with MessengerPiccione explained why he would have wanted to see his amnesiac companion: «I would like – he said – to understand how we can help ourselves. I would like to tell him: don’t invent memories, but create new ones now. You don’t have the old ones, but you can still make others. In short, live the present and the future.” And again: «The secret is to transform bad luck into challenge. Don’t feel sorry for yourself. When I often have to be a “regretologist”, I have really changed.” After the accident, the doctor gave up his role as head physician at the Lodi hospital, began studying again to make up for the 12 years of medicine he had lost, and now deals with severely disabled people and with cognitive and motor rehabilitation. He has written six books, from which the subject for the Rai television series “Doc – In your hands” was taken. He also tried to recover his memory through innovative therapies, with electric shocks or other techniques, but he achieved no results. “Now I’ll do another one, with electrodes that try to stimulate the gray box,” he says, but so far – according to what specialists report – this type of treatment has always had modest and temporary effects on patients.
