Lucia Tombo’s Nightmarish Holiday Experience in Tanzania with Caterpillar Infestation

You may have heard of people getting spiders in their ear canals or beetles behind their eyeballs?

Having such scratches under the skin should – not surprisingly – be quite uncomfortable. Especially if you can feel them crawling around.

An influencer named Lucia Tombo found out recently:

During a stay in Tanzania in East Africa, she got a stowaway inside her toe – which quickly turned her dream holiday into a nightmare.

Arousing attention: – What a shame

– Horrible

– It started with an annoying itch that didn’t go away. I thought I had been bitten by something.

Lucia tells the news agency Jam Press. She says that she went for several days with the annoying itch in her leg before she saw a doctor.

At the local doctor’s office in Tanzania, she received the shock message:

– He said it bluntly: “You have a caterpillar in your leg”. It was absolutely horrible, says Lucia to Jam.

In the wake of the caterpillar drama, she has posted a video from the nightmare on her Instagram. There you can see the crab under her skin, while she pokes at it.

– It’s moving! she shouts in the clip.

– Would amputate

The larva Lucia had in her leg is called a “cutaneous larva migrans”. It is according to Store norske lexikon an itchy skin infection that can be caused by several different roundworms.

The larvae penetrate intact skin and move around the skin aimlessly, until they die within a few weeks.

Lucia tells Jam that she was “completely put off” by the message.

– I didn’t understand how it had got there, and I really wanted to know as little as possible about it, says the young woman about the small mark in her toe.

Larva migrans is a harmless and self-limiting disease, but the itching is very intense and warrants treatment in itself, writes SNL further. Lucia confirms this to Jam:

– The doctor said I had to let it run its course, but gave me some creams to calm the itching. I felt nauseous. I would actually rather amputate than hear more about it, she says further.

Today, Lucia’s toe is maggot-free, and the young woman escaped with her foot intact. However, she will soon forget the unpleasant experience, she assures in a final comment to Jam:

– I have two words: Never again.
