With seven goals, Luca Waldschmidt not only became the top scorer of the U21 European Championship last summer, but also a coveted attacker throughout Europe, who nevertheless decided to stay with SC Freiburg. However, staying in the comparatively modest Breisgau did not prevent Waldschmidt from making the leap into the senior national team.
Probably primarily as a reward for his performances in the U21, national coach Joachim Löw nominated Siegener, who was then allowed to run the full 90 minutes in the international friendly against Argentina (2: 2) in October and also with the 3: 0 success in the EURO qualification in Estonia started a few days later.
In November Waldschmidt was part of the line-up again, but this time the trip to the DFB team was not very pleasant. In the 4-0 win against Belarus, the offensive man had to leave the field shortly after his substitution in the DFB jersey, due to a collision with the Belarusian goalkeeper Aleksandr Gutor with several serious injuries.
In addition to a midface fracture, Waldschmidt also suffered injuries to the knee, calf and ankle, all of which sounded like total damage.
Waldschmidt reports back quickly
But the 23-year-old came back faster than expected and already missed the Bundesliga kick-off in January due to illness. After a substitution, Waldschmidt quickly found himself back in the Freiburg starting line-up and scored his fifth and to date last goal of the season in the 1-0 win over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in February. Because before the Corona break, the technically fogged left foot had to deal with adductor problems before the entire football business had been inactive for over six weeks.
The corona virus has not only interrupted the game, but also thrown the plans of many clubs. Player salaries and transfer fees are also expected to decrease, although the latter could not be unimportant in relation to Waldschmidt.
The contract runs until 2022
Because it is in the room that the attacker could leave SC Freiburg after this season and then three years. According to the British “Sun”, there should be interest from Chelsea, among others. Freiburg, Waldschmidt, who has declared several times that he would like to play in Spain one day, does not have to give up in summer 2021. But if the offensive man who can be used as a center forward as well as hanging behind a central attacker offers the chance to switch to an internationally represented top club, a farewell from Freiburg is certainly not excluded.
