One day after the end of the season, Honda announced the name of the driver who will replace Marc Márquez in the Japanese team in 2024. The choice fell on Luca Marini, half-brother of champion Valentino Rossi, the driver with whom the Spaniard fought hard and controversial battles on and off the track.
Marini, aged 26, leaves the Mooney VR46 Racing Team, Rossi’s team, which also includes Marco Bezzecchi, and which competes on Ducati chassis. This season his best result was second place in Austin, in the United States, having finished the World Cup in 8th place.
The Italian, who signed for two years, will have the tough task of replacing Márquez, eight-time World champion, six of them in MotoGP, who announced his departure for Gresini Racing. He will have Joan Mir as his partner at Honda.
It now remains to be seen who will take Marini’s place in Rossi’s team and in the paddock it is said that the choice could fall to Fabio Di Giannantonio. The Italian, who in yesterday’s race in Valencia, rode with Pecco Bagnaia in the fight for victory, is unemployed after leaving Gresini Racing, to make way… for Márquez!
