For the first time, the two give an insight into their Spanish hideaway with a swimming pool and three bathrooms in ‘The Holiday Home’, an HLN Originals series. “We have worked hard for this.”

“We did it for this.” Luc Appermont and Bart Kaëll smile as they enjoy the view, leaning on the railing of their terrace. In the distance, the sun reflects off the waves of the Mediterranean, below them white holiday villas are scattered like a patchwork among the greenery of the trees. The second episode of her HLN Originals series brings Birgit van Mol (54) to the Costa Blanca, where Luc Appermont and – now his other half for 44 years – Bart Kaëll have been on holiday for years.

“It was nice to welcome Birgit”, says Luc about her visit. “We don’t receive everyone, but we are happy to make an exception for a classy lady like Birgit. Our house in Spain is a beacon of tranquility for us. We have searched for it for years and have visited dozens of properties in France, Spain and Italy, but in this place everything comes together. A view of the sea, but also of the mountains and that is what Bart really wanted.”

Brushing yourself
The couple converted a villa from the seventies into a beautiful paradise with a swimming pool, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, an outdoor bar and a music studio for Bart. “It was a crumpled house with a piece of thatched roof when we first saw it,” says Luc. “In the meantime, it has become exactly what we wanted while the charm has remained.”

“Every time we turn the key in the lock here, it feels like coming home,” the acclaimed presenter continues. “We sometimes go on a trip to Valencia, for example, but we enjoy the pure tranquility and a walk in the mountains here even more.” Although there is always work on a house. “We do the cleaning ourselves, but we have a gardener to maintain the garden,” it sounds. “Furthermore, there are always chores in a house and, for example, an electrician sometimes has to come. But being relaxed in a house is also a form of vacation.”

90 years of career
Bart’s parents also had an apartment in Spain, it was the charm singer who sparked Luc’s interest in a house abroad. The two were able to get their dream spot around the turn of the century for a good price. “Money helps to achieve what you like, but we also worked hard for it, it didn’t fly to us,” Bart says. “If you add up our careers – mine 40 years, Luc’s 50 years – we get ninety years in total, that’s something.”

Finally, we learned about the daily habits of the showbiz couple. Not a day goes by that Luc Appermont does not eat cake. “(laughs) A Limburg custom, I’m afraid”, says the presenter. “Although I have to say that the pies in Spain are not as good as with us in Limburg. There used to be a Belgian baker who made them just as good, but he has stopped for a while so I have to look for a new address.”
