The run traditionally begins at the old train station and then leads along the promenade through the seaside resort.

In the seaside resort of Lubmin (Western Pomerania-Greifswald district), 353 runners took part in the Sebastian Fredrich Memorial Run. Part of the entry fees goes to the Greifswald children’s cancer station. The state championship in road running over ten, five and two and a half kilometers was also held in Lubmin. In the men’s race, defending champion Nikita Rode improved his time in the long distance by 20 seconds. Last year he completed the route in 31 minutes and 26 seconds. Among the women, Johanna Ewert from Schwerin was once again the fastest runner over ten kilometers, but this year she was 16 seconds slower. Last year she won with 36 minutes and 20 seconds. However, this time she did not become MV national champion because she is officially registered with Hannover96. The championship and memorial run are hosted by the University Sports Association of the University of Greifswald.

In 2000, Sebastian Fredrich told Nordmagazin about his hard fight against leukemia and how he initially got well again with the support of his family and friends.

The sporting event’s namesake, Sebastian Fredrich, was a successful middle and long-distance runner. Born in Rostock in 1980, he celebrated many successes as a track and field athlete. But then he became ill with leukemia in 1993. Fredrich was initially able to overcome the illness and became German junior champion over 5000 meters in the same year. The competitive athlete finally made it into the national team. But Sebastian Fredrich was no longer able to realize his big dream of an Olympic medal. He lost his battle with cancer in December 2001, just before his 22nd birthday. In memory of this exceptional sporting talent, the HSG University of Greifswald organizes a memorial run every year, which Sebastian Fredrich’s brother, the Greifswald journalist Benjamin Fredrich, won several times.
