With his razor-sharp items, Arjen Lubach has released a lot last season. From a long-running discussion about making the Netherlands gas-free until a spicy fight with all conspiracy thinkers. Unfortunately, some seemed like others Sunday with Lubachitems barely produce anything. This is also the case with the item about the tobacco industry and the special working methods of the European Union.
This whole issue started a year ago. Arjen Lubach then made this item about the tobacco industry. What he was mainly concerned about at the time is that the wrong measuring method is used to determine how harmful cigars are. Cigarette makers know how to get around these and so Arjen Lubach felt called to do something about this.
Arjen Lubach finally gets a response
For this he knocked on the door of Stella Kyriakidou. She is European Commissioner for Health and could therefore do something about this. Unfortunately she did not respond. Arjen Lubach decided to engage his followers. He called on them to start following Stella Kyriakidou on Twitter and message her there. For example, the European Commissioner suddenly received messages from all sides with the request to start thinking about the Canadian Intense method. According to experts, this is much more accurate than the current method that is used.
The amount of tweets sent was overwhelming, but ultimately pointless. Stella Kyriakidou ignored them all and didn’t speak up. Still, Arjen doesn’t want to give up Lubach just yet, so he just tried it again. In an item about the so-called Euro Gorge, the host of Sunday with Lubach the viewers once more to climb into the digital pen. Again, the call was answered en masse, and this time it had an effect.
European Commissioner promises to do their best
Stella Kyriakides has finally responded to the thousands of messages she has received. In a tweet, the European Commissioner for Health announced that she had heard Arjen Lubach and us. She then assures everyone that the EU is hard at work protecting residents from the dangers of tobacco.
To everyone that has contacted me on CanadianIntense, I can assure you that @EU_Commission is working hard to protect citizens from the dangers of tobacco, especially with the effects of smoking on #COVID19.

We will look closely at scientific evidence when reporting on the Tobacco Products Directive in 2021. But no matter the method, smoking is never safe. Only stopping is.
This will also be my message to @tamaravanark & @PaulBlokhuis today.

Arjen Lubach’s appeal has worked, but not quite. Stella Kyriakides still doesn’t seem very enthusiastic about getting started with the Canadian Intense method. In a response to her own tweet, she tries to ignore the entire method discussion. She would rather point out to her followers that quitting smoking is still the best solution.
Twitter does not think this is enough
Many followers are not satisfied with that. They think Stella’s tweet is an empty statement. It is not an answer to the matter, but a meaningless response.
Wow! It only took a year! Hi Stella, what nice of you to join us. I don’t want to rain on you parade, but WTF! This was a completely meaningless tweet. You can do better than this! I think @arjenlubach has some scientific evidence available. Please don’t let the big money win…

Great that you are responding to EU citizens on this matter! Can you provide more clarity on your policies in HOW you want citizens to quit smoking? Are you planning to enforce the law on the tobacco industry? Implement #canadianintense for example !

So it took you a whole year to come up with this completely empty response, when can we expect some actual results of your so called ‘hard work’?
– Bec (@McRebec) November 21, 2020
What an empty statement. Could you give us a detailed answer why we don’t use the Canadian method instead of saying that you’re “working hard”? Just make a statement that scientifically proofs that the method we’re using right now is better than the Canadian Instense. Geez.

Hard work??? As hard work as responding to questions on Twitter after a year ??? Are you not ashamed ??? pic.twitter.com/ACMLPR2GUR

.@arjenlubach WE FINALLY HAVE A RESPONSE. But it is still useless: C.

Arjen Lubach achieves his goal
Thus Arjen Lubach has brought about quite a bit. Whether this will ultimately lead to the EU taking a tougher approach to the tobacco industry remains to be seen. Still, Arjen Lubach can be satisfied, because he has made sure of that with his items the Euro Gorge he invented has become a bit smaller.
