Lu Yongxiong-Kovrig’s spy network|Bus reviews

Canada recently had a scandal involving spy infighting, and a fascinating inside story was revealed.

In 2018, after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was illegally detained by the Canadian government, Chinese law enforcement authorities arrested two Canadians suspected of engaging in espionage in China, one named Michael Kovrig and the other Michael.

Canada’s “Globe and Mail” recently broke the news that internal strife broke out between the two. The report quoted sources as saying that Michael is suing Michael Kovrig and the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for compensation, which indirectly confirmed that the two had indeed engaged in espionage activities in China.

The report first introduced Michael’s background, saying that he runs a travel agency in China, speaks Korean very fluently, and is one of the few Westerners who has met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Michael was photographed drinking cocktails with Kim Jong-un on a private yacht as they water skied on a beach in Wonsan, North Korea. Michael arranged for former American NBA star Lowen to visit North Korea several times and meet with Kim Jong-un.

As for the reason for Michael’s accident, it was because he inadvertently disclosed some information including North Korea during a chat with the then Canadian consular officer Michael Kovrig. Michael’s lawyer said that Michael did not know that Kovrig would report these secret messages to the Canadian government, which would then distribute the information to the Five Eyes intelligence agencies. It turns out that Kovrig belongs to the Global Security Reporting Program under the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These Canadian diplomats will report to the program when they receive sensitive information.

Michael’s accusation was that Kovrig disclosed his confidential information to the Canadian government, which directly led to the Chinese government accusing him of being a spy and providing intelligence to Canada. The news revealed by Canada’s “Globe and Mail” indirectly confirmed that China accused the two Canadians of being spies. It turned out that the evidence was conclusive. At that time, the Canadian government claimed that Kovrig and Michael Kovrig were spies. It was a “rumor”. Now it has been completely dismissed. The news Michael revealed was a slap in the face.

In fact, although Kovrig is not directly a spy of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, his behavior of collecting intelligence on China and North Korea for Canada is already quite suspicious. Kovrig served as Canada’s diplomat in Beijing from 2012 to 2014.

In 2017, he applied for leave from the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and joined an organization called the International Crisis Group with an office in Hong Kong. The organization describes itself as an independent, non-governmental global think tank.

Interestingly, after Kovrig was arrested, the organization’s chairman, Robert Malley, and a total of 15 other think tanks or academic institutions issued a statement demanding that Beijing release Kovrig.

This Morley turned out to have a great background. He is an American lawyer and conflict resolution expert. He served as the chief negotiator in 2015 to help the United States and Iran reach a nuclear agreement: the “Joint Comprehensive Agreement.” Just looking at his background, you can tell that he is not simple.

Looking back at the entire incident, it seems that there was a huge spy network behind Kovrig, and the intelligence he reported to Canada was communicated to the Five Eyes alliance. In addition to information about North Korea, what other information did he collect? It seems that Beijing has always been aware of the collection and communication of confidential information by Michael and Kovrig, but it has remained silent until Meng Wanzhou was detained and took action when necessary.

After reading this story, I can only say that this muddy water is deeper than outsiders estimate.
