The SEC announced today that LSU will be fined a hefty sum of $100,000 for allowing fans to enter the court following its men’s basketball game against Kentucky on February 21.
The incident, which took place at the LSU Pete Maravich Assembly Center, has raised concerns about the safety of both participants and spectators. The SEC’s access to competition area policy clearly states that only participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel, and properly credentialed or authorized individuals should have access to the competition area at all times. Spectators are strictly prohibited from entering the competition area before, during, or after a contest.
This is not the first time that LSU has violated this policy. The SEC’s revised access to competition area policy was adopted at the SEC Spring Meetings in 2023, and LSU’s offense falls under the category of a first offense. As a result, the university has been slapped with a fine of $100,000. It is worth noting that financial penalties are imposed for violations in all sports sponsored by the Conference. The severity of the penalties increases with each subsequent offense, with fines ranging from $250,000 for a second offense to a staggering $500,000 for a third and subsequent offenses.
In accordance with the Conference’s rules, fines for violations during Conference contests are paid to the opposing institution. However, fines for non-conference contests, like the one between LSU and Kentucky, are deposited into the SEC Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund. This fund supports student-athletes across the Conference in pursuing their postgraduate education.
The access to competition area policy was initially adopted by a vote of Conference members back in 2004. However, it was not until 2015 that financial penalties were increased, and the membership took further action in 2023 to strengthen the consequences for violations. These measures were put in place to ensure the safety and integrity of SEC sporting events, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by the Conference.
LSU’s violation serves as a reminder to all institutions within the SEC that the access to competition area policy is not to be taken lightly.
