Signed MOU for cooperation in voltage-type ultra-high voltage direct current transmission business between two companies
[인더스트리뉴스 조창현 기자] Recently, voltage-type HVDC has been introduced in large numbers, mainly in large-scale renewable energy complexes in Europe and the United States. Compared to current-type HVDC, voltage-type HVDC can control two-way power flow in real time and is advantageous for system operation and stabilization.

Accordingly, LS Electric is planning to jointly target the domestic and global markets by strengthening its HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) business partnership with GE Vernova. LS Electric announced on the 24th that it signed a ‘business agreement for cooperation in the voltage-type HVDC global business’ with GE Vernova.
The agreement ceremony was attended by officials including Oh Jae-seok, COO (President) of LS Electric Power CIC, and Johan Bindele, CEO of Grid Solutions (GSI) of GE Vernova. GE Vernova Grid Solutions is a global manufacturer of ultra-high voltage power equipment and HVDC, headquartered in France. It is growing rapidly in Europe and the Americas, where the voltage-type HVDC market is recently expanding.
The two companies agreed to jointly respond to HVDC demand in the global market by utilizing LS Electric’s HVDC production infrastructure. Specifically, the two companies will actively utilize the ultra-high voltage transformer production infrastructure, including LS Electric’s Busan plant, to supply products desired by global customers in a timely manner and establish a partnership to utilize GE Vernova’s global technology and recognition to expand the domestic voltage-type HVDC market. We plan to strengthen it further.
LS Electric invested a total of KRW 110 billion in 2011 to establish Korea’s first HVDC-specific factory in Busan, capable of everything from parts warehousing to performance testing, assembly/testing, and test operation. Since then, it has led the localization of key equipment and has recently won orders in overseas HVDC markets as well. It is expanding.
LS Electric President Oh Jae-seok said, “We have maintained a close cooperative relationship with Vernova since we participated in the domestic current-type HVDC business together in 2013,” and added, “Starting with the MOU, we will strengthen our competitiveness in QCD (Quality, Cost, Delivery) of ultra-high voltage power equipment.” “At the same time, we will grow together as an infrastructure company specializing in the future electric power industry.”
Meanwhile, HVDC, known as the ‘flower of transmission technology’, refers to a technology that converts AC power produced at a power plant into high-voltage DC power using a power converter, transmits it, and then converts it back to AC power at the receiving point. LS Electric explained that HVDC is suitable for long-distance, high-capacity power supply compared to existing AC power, enables transmission and power flow control, and has the advantage of not generating electromagnetic waves.
