“Lozenets” Hospital with a new initiative – “Lozenets” Clinical Days

The first event is dedicated to pancreatic cancer

“Lozenets” University Hospital is starting a new initiative – Clinical days on various topics. The first event, which will take place on January 20, 2023, focuses on pancreatic cancer. In parallel, the medical facility opened the first Pancreatic Center in our country. Pancreatic surgery is the most complex visceral surgery and is performed in highly specialized centers, as is the practice in Europe and the world. This will also be the case with the newly created center headed by Assoc. Dr. Oleg Cholakov, who is also the moderator of the first “Lozenets” Clinical Days. He is a proven specialist with over 25 years of experience in pancreatic surgery, specializing and working in the two largest German pancreatic centers in Heidelberg and Bochum, as well as in the Pancreatic Center in Bern, Switzerland.

The guest speaker at the event is Prof. Dr. Waldemar Wool – Director of the Surgical Clinic at St. Joseph Hospital, Bochum and Professor of Surgery at the Ruhr University, Bochum, President of the German Surgical Society and Honorary Member of the Bulgarian Surgical Society.

The topic of his lecture is “Multimodal Therapy of Pancreatic Carcinoma”. Prof. Wool will also hold a discussion with students during which he will present good practices from his experience.

A press conference with Prof. Dr. Waldemar Wool is planned, which will take place at 1:00 p.m.

Prof. Dr. Waldemar Wool was born in 1960.

He graduated in medicine in 1987 at the University of Ulm, Germany

During the period 1988-1993, he was an assistant at the Ulm University Surgical Clinic.

From 1993 to 2001 he worked at the University Hospital Inselspital – Bern, Switzerland, and during the period 2001-2003 – at the University Surgery Clinic, Heidelberg, Germany.

Since 2004, he has been Director of the Surgical Clinic at St. Joseph Hospital, Bochum, Germany and Professor of Surgery at the Ruhr University, Bochum.

In October 2022, he was elected President of the German Surgical Society for the term 2024-2025.

Prof. Dr. Wool has been an honorary member of the Bulgarian Surgical Society since 2006.

Prof. Dr. Wool’s first visit to Bulgaria was in 2004, and subsequently he visited the country many times to participate in scientific forums of the Bulgarian Surgical Society, UMBALSM “Pirogov” and to perform a number of operative interventions on Bulgarian patients. His visits to the country made possible the development of modern pancreatic surgery in our country.

Prof. Dr. Wool in his personal capacity and the institutions in which he worked – the University Hospital Inselspital – Bern, the University Surgical Clinic, Heidelberg and the St. Joseph Hospital – Bochum, made a significant contribution to the development of Bulgarian surgery and medicine. With his personal assistance and support, more than 30 of our specialists – surgeons, gastroenterologists, traumatologists and nurses – have been trained in them over the years.
