Lowest number of road deaths since 2015

Last year, 582 people died in a traffic accident in the Netherlands. That is the lowest number since 2015, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics. Then 621 people died.

Compared to 2020, there were 28 fewer road casualties last year. Men, in particular, were less likely to be victims of an accident. Last year, 427 men died in traffic, 26 fewer than in 2020. For women, the number of victims fell from 157 to 155.

According to the CBS, the decrease can be explained by the reduced traffic as a result of the corona measures and by government campaigns, such as those against driving with alcohol.

More motorcycle and moped accidents

Most of the victims were cyclists and car occupants (382), but there were 42 fewer than in 2020. The number of people who died on motorcycles and mopeds increased by 24 victims to 101 last year.

Most fatal accidents were caused by a collision with a moving vehicle and half of the road deaths were 60 years or older. Older fatal traffic victims are relatively often involved in a bicycle accident. Traffic victims under the age of 60 mainly die in a car accident.

Last year, the most traffic victims were regretted in Gelderland and South Holland. Zeeland was the province with the fewest road deaths.
