High blood pressure is a precursor to serious health problems ranging from heart attacks to strokes.

Therefore, keeping a pressure reading in check is essential, with one surprising drink promising results.

While milk has long been accused of being linked to high cholesterol because much of the fat it contains is saturated, skimmed milk could have a few tricks up its sleeve.

OriGym fitness trainer James Brady said: “Milk products contain a specific type of protein called bioactive peptides that have been shown to have a positive effect on blood control.

He added: “These peptides are purported to have angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory properties that can relax blood vessel walls and lower blood pressure.”

Another reason why skimmed milk lowers high blood pressure is due to the key nutrients it contains, including calcium, potassium and magnesium.

Brady continued, “Salts and minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium play a role in controlling blood pressure because they can help blood vessels tighten and relax when necessary.”

While Dr. Sunny Patel explained, potassium can help regulate high blood pressure by reducing the effects of sodium on your reading.

He added that magnesium can help relax blood vessels and improve blood flow, which leads to lower blood pressure levels.

Don’t just take the experts’ word for it, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that drinking a glass of skim milk daily can lower blood pressure by up to a third.

Dr Patel added: “The extent to which skim milk can lower high blood pressure will depend on a variety of factors, including the severity of high blood pressure and the general diet and lifestyle of the individual.”

It is worth noting that the drop in blood pressure may not be immediate and may take a few weeks to months to become noticeable. Continued consumption of skimmed milk as part of a balanced diet, along with other lifestyle modifications such as exercise and stress management, may help improve blood pressure. blood pressure over time,” he continues.

And according to Brady, two cups of milk a day should be enough to do the trick and keep your reading in check.

However, Dr. Patel noted that the amount needed to cut back may vary depending on factors such as age, gender, body weight, general diet, and lifestyle habits.

“Studies show that eating 3 servings of low-fat dairy products per day, including skim milk, can lead to a modest reduction in blood pressure,” he added.

He concluded: “It is important to note that excessive consumption of dairy products, even low-fat or fat-free options, may have negative health effects, such as an increased risk of some types of cancer. Therefore, it is important to consume skimmed milk and other dairy products in moderation as part of your diet.” A well-balanced diet that also includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.”
