Lower Saxony has coped well with Great Britain’s exit from the European single market, according to the Lower Saxony European Ministry. “We have worked hard in recent years to ensure that Lower Saxony is prepared for the time after Brexit,” said European Minister Birgit Honé (SPD) after a round table on Brexit on Friday. “This is obviously paying off now.” The conclusion of the conversation with around 30 representatives of Lower Saxony companies, institutions and associations was that most companies were prepared for the exit and therefore did not have any unforeseen problems. Even if the transition was largely unscathed: “With Brexit, both sides lose in the long run,” said Honé.

At the end of 2020, the United Kingdom left the customs union and internal market with the European Union, which brought about changes in, for example, deep-sea fishing and the trade in food. “There is a lot we need to talk about further: the recognition of professional qualifications, the exchange of young people and the future of fishing are just a few examples,” said the minister. “Even after Brexit, Lower Saxony and the United Kingdom will remain close neighbors.”
