Suffering and injustice of former children in care is recognized
–
In the post-war period, thousands of children and young people in institutions experienced injustice. People who were classified as disabled or suspicious were beaten or immobilized. Their suffering is to be recognized with a lump sum.
Berlin / Hanover / Bremen (dpa / lni) – Around 1500 former home children from Lower Saxony have received money from the Foundation for recognition and help. This was announced by the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs when asked by the German Press Agency. The payment acknowledges that the women and men experienced suffering and injustice in facilities for disabled people or psychiatry in the post-war period. Many people classified as disabled or conspicuous were beaten and immobilized at the time, excluded from school and insufficiently cared for in terms of health. Some were used for medical tests. Nationwide, almost 19,000 people have received recognition benefits since 2017. The number of those who turned to the foundation is around 31,300.
The foundation was established by the federal government, the federal states as well as the Protestant and Catholic Church to come to terms with the past and to recognize the suffering. Those affected could register until the end of June 2021 in order to receive a lump sum of 9,000 euros. Anyone who worked during their stay in the inpatient facility subject to social security contributions without the facility paying social security contributions could receive up to 5000 euros in addition to compensate for lost pension entitlements.
In Lower Saxony, a total of around 15.8 million euros was paid out to 1524 people affected. In Bremen, 91 affected people received benefits totaling 821,300 euros. By the end of June, the foundation had paid a total of 18,990 men and women nationwide the lump sum and / or the pension replacement benefit of up to 5000 euros. The total amount paid out is just under 196.6 million euros.
