The Krefeld-Mönchengladbach Theater Orchestra has received one of the most coveted music awards in Germany for recording works by Alexander Glazunov.

The Niederrheinische Sinfoniker and their Director General of Music (GMD) Mihkel Kütson were awarded the “Opus Klassik” prize. This is one of the most prestigious awards for musicians in Germany. The orchestra of the Theater Krefeld-Mönchengladbach received the prize in the category “Symphonic recording” for its CD with works by Alexander Glazunov, released by the classical music label Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm. The recording, produced by sound engineer Holger Schlegel, includes the interpretation of Symphony No. 7 “Pastorale” and the “Carnaval” overture.

At the award ceremony in Berlin, Mihkel Kütson collected the award on behalf of the orchestra together with general conductor Michael Grosse, first violin Philipp Wenger, conductor Martin Kallnischkies and playwright Eva Ziegelhöfer. The recording of this year’s “Opus Klassik” awards ceremony, including the award ceremony of the Lower Rhine Orchestra, is available in the ZDF media library www.zdf.de see.

The Lower Rhine Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1950 as part of the theatrical marriage between the cities of Krefeld and Mönchengladbach. However, the orchestra was not given its name until 1973. Estonian Mihkel Kütson has been general director of the symphony orchestra since 2012. In addition to its own concerts, the orchestra provides musical accompaniment to theatrical performances. Renowned composers, conductors and soloists regularly work with Lower Rhine musicians. There is also a close collaboration with the Krefeld and Gladbach music schools.
