Lower Manhattan Corner Named in Honor of Charly García’s Iconic Album

The corner of Walker Street and Cortlandt Alley, in lower Manhattan, will now be named “Charly García Corner.” This in tribute to the 40th anniversary of his album “Clics Modernos”, released on November 5, 1983.

But this has a special reason, and it is that the iconic photo of the Argentine singer was taken on the aforementioned corner, sitting on the sidewalk, which ended up being the cover of the album.

A small Argentine crowd approached the place, where there was also a live concert performed by some singers who accompanied Charly García in his career. From there they performed some songs from the famous album.

“I’m happy, I’m excited”, Charly García’s message in gratitude

The Argentine consul in New York, Santiago Villalba, led the activity and read a message from the musician, who turned 72 in October.

“Charly tells us: ‘I feel honored by the invitation and that they have chosen me to have a street corner named after me. I don’t know many world-famous artists to whom this has happened, in a city like New York no less,” says the singer born in Buenos Aires.

“I’m happy, I’m excited, I can’t wait to tell a taxi driver ‘drop me off here, on Walker Street,” the consul read to close the letter.

The proclamation for the corner to be renamed “Charly García Corner” bears the signature of Mayor Eric Adams.

The commissioners of Transportation and International Affairs of the City of New York, Ydanis Rodríguez and Edward Mermelstein, also participated in the ceremony.

There was also Mariano Cabrera, the Argentine who promoted the project, Charly García’s sister, Josi García and the singers who put together the concert: Hilda Lizarazu, Fabián Zorrito Von Quintiero, Fernando Samalea, Alfi Martins, Kiuge Hayashida and Toño Silva.
