The House of Representatives will elect a new chairman from 10.15 am. This is common after elections. There are three candidates: the current chairman Khadija Arib (PvdA) and two people with extensive experience as vice-chairman: Vera Bergkamp (D66) and Martin Bosma (PVV).
All three candidates will present themselves this morning. After that, the various political groups ask the candidates questions about their plans and how they want to fill in the parliamentary presidency. Then there is a written vote (because it is anonymous), possibly in several rounds.
The election of the President of the House can be followed from 10.15 am on NPO Politics, on NOS.nl and in the NOS app.
If no one has obtained the absolute majority in the first two rounds, the candidate with the fewest votes will be eliminated in the third round. The general expectation is that of the three candidates Bosma is the least promising, despite the great appreciation for him as vice-chairman, and that it will mainly be between Arib and Bergkamp.
Experience
Arib has been in the Chamber since 1998, with a short interruption. She has been President of the Chamber since 2016. She then took over the position from VVD member Anouchka van Miltenburg. She was re-elected in 2017, without rivals. Before that, Arib was already vice-chairman.
In her letter of application, Arib emphasizes her long experience. She is popular with many people, but some blame her rigidity in the discussion about the move of the Chamber. It is scheduled for later this year; the Kamergebouw will then be renovated.
