From Friday evening the first ships will be sailing on the Main again. From 6 p.m. the locks from Mühlheim to Lengfurt will be reopened. This is reported by the Waterways and Shipping Office Main (WSA). From next week the remaining locks from Rothenfels to Viereth will open.
The reason for the two-week closure was maintenance work on several Main locks. Some of the locks had to be drained. Among other things, walls, gates and gate drives were examined. The repair work went as planned – the good weather made the work easier.
Since the closures were announced early, ships and ports were able to react and reschedule in good time. Some locks are 80 to 90 years old and are used regularly – which is why they have to be repaired every year.
