Lower emissions from vehicles: DPD renews environmental strategy

The parcel supplier DPD has set itself an ambitious goal in its Green Delivery initiative: DPD Germany wants to achieve locally emission-free parcel deliveries in 23 German city centers by 2025. 200 million euros are being invested in this.

DPDgroup will introduce low-emission parcel delivery in 225 of the largest European cities by 2025. The reason for this is the report by the European Environment Agency from 2018. According to this, inner-city transport of goods is responsible for around 30 percent of all CO2 emissions and 50 percent of all particulate matter emissions in cities. This air pollution, mainly due to road traffic, is suspected of shortening the lives of people in cities of over 100,000 inhabitants by 15 months.

“We are aware of our responsibility towards the planet and people. That is why we strive to become the most sustainable parcel service provider in Europe,” explains Boris Winkelmann, CEO of the international DPDgroup. “DPDgroup is contributing to global climate change – that is why we want to play an important role in finding solutions. With this goal in mind, we have decided to act pragmatically and to reduce our emissions in the European cities with the most inhabitants . “

Shorter routes and alternative delivery options

The new type of delivery includes low-emission drives from electric cars such as the Volkswagen eCrafter and 80 micro-depots as well as 130 urban depots to reduce driving distances.

Other delivery methods are also under discussion, such as cargo bikes, handcarts and delivery options on foot. DPDgroup has been testing this “green delivery strategy” in many European cities for years. In cities such as Hamburg, London, Warsaw and Dublin, corresponding initiatives have already been implemented in the operational business. On the basis of the experience gained in this way, DPDgroup now wants to change urban delivery across the board.

Since the end of 2019, the DPDgroup has been delivering throughout the Paris city area with low-emission shipping solutions. The new program represents a massive expansion of these activities across Europe and is to be gradually expanded to over 260 million parcels and thus 17 percent of the total parcel volume of the DPDgroup.

In Germany, DPD is gradually implementing low-emission delivery in 23 city centers. The idea of greener deliveries is now being expanded in the following large cities: Augsburg, Berlin, Bonn, Bremen, Cologne, Dortmund, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hamm, Hanover, Kiel, Leipzig, Mannheim, Munich, Nuremberg , Oberhausen, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden and Wuppertal.

On the Delivery Days From November 3rd to 5th you will find out how you as a retailer can improve your logistics processes and thereby secure competitive advantages.
